Peter
I have read your reply to dancingrl and I believe you have tried to be helpful rather than political. However, with due respect, I don't think you have a full understanding of what knowledge means with respect to dancing.
Dancingrl said that many dancers are not comfortable being judged by people who have not danced as well as they are dancing.
You and Adwiz don't seem to be concerned about the dancing expertise of a judge. That is your opinion. It is not mine and I'm sure most readers will not agree with you. In my view Peter's concept of knowledge is the cause of this difference of opinion.
Peter says it is an assumption that you judge (ie see things and know things) at the same level as you dance. He says this assumption is definitely wrong. No Peter the concept is definitely right! (It may not be the way the person dances today but has danced at the level perhaps when he was much younger)
Your statement that most couples already know and see more than what they can dance on the floor shows where you are coming from. Because someone has read and remembered a statement in a book or repeated what a top coach has told them does not mean they "know" it or understand it. For example many dancers know they should lower on a particular step but they do not do it properly. They do it very poorly as beginners; they do it better as national amateur class and do it much better as international level competitors.
We all know people who can talk a great dance. Knowledge is more than talking. Who are all the great ballet teachers? Former star performers. It is the same in all dance forms. It is only IDSF who are trying to dismiss this and say it doesn’t matter in dancesport. Probably because nearly all the past champions are in the WDC.
You asked who does Gozzoli think is good enough to judge his dancing? The answer is easy. Go to Blackpool next month, my friend. Look at the judging panel. How many champions will you see? I'll tell you one thing, you will not see a judge who has not been a great dancer. That is what gives Blackpool credibility. That is what is knowledge.
Dancingrl has every right to be concerned if she is judged by people who themselves have never reached the level she is dancing at.
